You’r First

Acrylic and marker on paper, 30x41, February 2020

The misspelling on “You’r” makes the word ambiguous: it could either be possessive or a contraction. When the viewer reads the word as “Your”, the red paint symbolizes an experience for the viewer, such as their first bloody nose. When the viewer reads the word as “You’re”, the red paint becomes a threat to the viewer. The lightness of the red paint signifies that the “blood” is still fresh, giving living energy to the piece.
