Glimpse of Times Square

Colored Pencil, Mechanical Pencil, Watercolor Paper, 2 ½’ by 2’, 1/10/19-5/1/19

I want to explore the theme of how a real-life event could be depicted in a cartoon manner. I experimented with using different pressures on the colored pencil in order to create different patterns, vibrancy, shadows, and highlights. As I continued to focus on preserving a memory, I wanted to use the negative space to achieve this sentiment of preservation. This memory was specifically when my sister and I went to watch a movie and Times Square. The purpose of the piece is to be able to transform that moment from my mind in the most vivid way which was recreating it. The piece can seem more like a structural depiction of a billboard seen in Times Square, which can make it seem less family-oriented or intimate. However, the factor that makes it more intimate is the sentimentality behind the piece, when it was created and how it led to the creation of other pieces. Also, the decision to use colored pencils was intentional because I had more control with colored pencils which was something I felt that I lacked at the moment. This allowed me to take control of the moment that seemed like it was fading away.
