Empire Stadium, Vancouver, BC, Canada, August 7, 1954
The mile race was eagerly anticipated on the final day of the British Empire and Commonwealth Games. It pitted against each other the freshly-minted mile world record holder, Roger Bannister of Britain, and John Landy of Australia, who had likewise set the 1500-metre world record a few weeks earlier in Finland.
John Landy of Australia sets the pace. World record holder Roger Bannister reaches on the 3rd lap and nails him on the homestretch.
The race has since been nicknamed "The Miracle Mile," and it's well documented in various books.
