Memorial Coliseum, Los Angeles, CA, USA, August 15 1932
World record holder Lauri Lehtinen from Finland and Ralph Hill from the host country are engaged in a scandal-plagued match in the 5000 metres at Los Angeles1932. The Finn seems to block the Oregon boy in the closing stages. The crowd goes crazy and announcer Henry is forced to admonish with the words, "Ladies and gentlemen, remember that these are our guests."
Later, the jury found that Lehtinen had wedged in front of Hill when he was already well ahead and that the blocking of the track had therefore not affected the outcome. The Italian athletics journalist Roberto Quercetani thought that Lehtinen was at least slightly obstructing his opponent. The great sportsman Hill said afterwards that Lehtinen was the best runner in the race and would have beaten the American any way.
