The first European Athletics Championships got off to a strong start for the Finns in Turin, Italy, in September 1934. Olympic champion Matti Järvinen immediately threw a new world record of 76.66m (251-9) on the opening day and defeated the silver medalist Matti Sippala by almost seven metres.
The future Olympic champion Ilmari Salminen was the most enduring in the 10,000 metres, and the Estonian-born Kalevi Kotkas won in the high jump.
