Women compete in Olympic athletics for the second time in Los Angeles 1932. Lillian Copeland, born into a Polish-Jewish immigrant family and having changed her name to English, threw without any spins in a no-nonsense manner. On her final throw, she set a world record of 40.59 (133-2), earning the gold in her hometown, adding to her Amsterdam 1928 silver. After her athletic career, Copeland worked as a senior officer in the Los Angeles Sheriff's Department, where she particularly focused on reforming juvenile delinquents.
