Bronx to City Hall, New York, NY, May 1, 1926
Melrose, MA, June 13, 1926
The form of Albin Stenroos, who had finished second in the Boston Marathon, remained strong. The veteran, already approaching his forties, also won a 12-mile street race held a couple of weeks later, run from the Bronx to New York City Hall. Finnish-American David Fagerlund finished sixth. Ville Ritola did not participate. The team competition was overwhelmingly won by the Finnish-American Athletic Club.
The Paris Marathon champion also visited Melrose, near Boston, in June, winning a 10-mile street race. The Olympic marathon champion claimed victories over US champion in the 15-mile run and four-time Boston Marathon winner Clarence DeMar and Johnny Miles, who had won the Boston race ahead of Stenroos a couple of months earlier. Miles faltered badly on the final lap and was carried to a hospital.
Stenroos's American tour of 1925–1926 went well, despite initial problems. He had started training in New York with Ritola and became badly overtrained. Even though the "Wolf of Peräseinäjoki" trained more lightly during his gap year, the pace was still very demanding for Stenroos.
