Eino Purje and Edvin Wide happened to compete in the same mile race in Madison Square Garden by coincidence in March. Purje came in third, and Wide placed fourth. The Americans Ray Conger and Leo Lermond left the Scandinavians behind in the final lap as if they were standing still.
