Stade de Colombes, Paris, September 11, 1921
The athletics match between France and Britain took place in Paris just before mid-September. A track and field contest between the nations seemed only natural, considering they had fought side by side in the recently ended First World War.
As field events were not the strength of the English athletes, the hospitable French hosts mostly included running events in the programme. The subpar condition of the track at Colombes Olympic Stadium slightly affected the results.
Joseph Guillemot, the chain-smoker who had famously defeated Paavo Nurmi at the Antwerp Olympics, was gradually rediscovering his lost passion for running. He won the 5,000 metres, although his time was well over 15 minutes.
Britain narrowly won the match, with a score of 123–118.
