Memorial Coliseum, Los Angeles, CA, May 18, 1929
The California Intercollegiate meet took place in Los Angeles. At Memorial Coliseum, renowned universities invested in track and field, such as Stanford, California (UCLA), South California (USC), and Berkeley's Cal, competed fiercely.
John Morrison worked hard to run 440 yards in 48.4 (equivalent to 48.1 in the meter distance). This placed him fifth in the season's rankings. He was absent in the season's top competitions, including the U.S. championships and university championships.
Stanford's Harlow Rothert sent the shot put flying to a distance of 15.58 (51-1¼), which earned him fifth place in the season's rankings, similar to Morrison.
Americans were slowly mastering the art of javelin throwing. Emery Curtice, a sturdy captain of the University of California, Berkeley, whose build somewhat resembled that of Jorma Kinnunen, achieved a world-ranking eighth place with a throw of 63.95 (209-9) at Memorial Coliseum.
Curtice, who lived to be 93, was remembered by later generations, as he was inducted into the University of California's Hall of Fame in 1999.
