Sten “Sten-Pelle” Pettersson, a man who seemingly required a dedicated steamer trunk for his medals, was in fine fettle as the battle for the Three Crowns commenced in late August.
The IK Göta stalwart dispatched both the 110 and 400 hurdles with practiced ease and anchored his club to victory in both the 4x100 and 4x400 relays. His path in the sprint hurdles was made somewhat smoother when the world record holder, Eric Wennström, decided to acquaint himself intimately with the Stockholm cinders.
Ossian Skiöld, a man making a serious bid for the title of world’s premier hammer-thrower in 1930, whirled his way to the top spot with a throw of 49.44 (162-2). This marked a sixth consecutive title for the Eskilstuna fellow, coming just six weeks after he had plundered the English national title.
The club title was claimed by Pettersson’s IK Göta, marking what would be the Stockholm outfit's final hurrah in the sport. In the decades that followed, IK Göta shifted its focus increasingly towards ice hockey, and their athletics department gradually faded into the background.
