Welcome Stadium, Dayton, Ohio, on June 27, 1953
Walter Davis, Olympic champion in Helsinki 1952, flies over 2.124 (6-11½). The official world record will be recorded in the annals as 2.12. After that, the 2.04 (6-8¼) tall Texas boy slipped off the track and field and started playing basketball for money.
Fortune Gordien, who finished 2nd, 3rd and 4th in three Olympics, throws the platter 56.02 (183-9). That's a couple of meters shy of the world record, set just a week earlier by Helsinki gold medallist and fierce competitor Sim Iness.
Jack Davis, who narrowly lost the Olympic gold medal twice in a row (1952 and 1956), licks from the outside to win the 220y hurdles. Decathlete Milt Campbell picks up the silver.
