The burly Irishman Matt McGrath, who had moved to New York, hurled the hammer the farthest, exchanging his silver medal from four years ago for gold with a throw of 54.74 (179-7). The competition is no match for him; even McGrath’s weakest throw surpasses the best efforts of his rivals. Remarkably, McGrath competed again at the 1924 Paris Olympics as a 46-year-old veteran, taking silver 16 years after his initial triumph.
