Buenos Aires, Argentina, April 17-22, 1924
The star of the third South American Championships was Chile’s distance runner Manuel Plaza, who won the 3000m, 5000m, and 10,000m races. These were shorter distances for the marathoner who ran the 42,195 meters in both the 1924 Paris and 1928 Amsterdam Olympics, winning silver in the latter.
Olympian Félix Escobar from Argentina claimed victory in the 200m and 400m, also contributing to Argentina’s victorious 4x400m team.
The standout performance came from Argentina’s triple jumper, Luis Brunetto. His winning jumps of 14.64m would have ranked sixth globally that season, had he not jumped nearly a meter farther in Paris at 15.42m (50-7) to secure a silver medal, narrowly beating Vilho Tuulos of Finland.
