George Rhoden in lane 7 goes out fast and reaches the 300m in a clear lead. Herbert McKenley, the silver medallist at London 1948, almost catched him by the finish line. Defending Olympic champion Arthur Wint, clearly second at the beginning of the home straight, severely faded in lane three and dropped to fifth.
