Ribas and Kleger Lurking Near the International Elite
Lima, Peru, May 5–10, 1929
The sixth official South American Championships were the first in a long time without the participation of champion runner Manuel Plaza. His absence opened the door for others to claim titles.
Plaza’s successor, José Ribas of Argentina, powered to victory in the 10,000 meters. The clock stopped at 32:10.4, ranking as the 20th fastest time in the world that season. Argentina’s Federico Kleger, who finished in the top 10 at both the Amsterdam and Los Angeles Olympics, launched his hammer to a championship record of 49.57 (162-7), the 22nd longest throw of the year worldwide.
A familiar name, Luis Brunetto, secured his fourth consecutive South American triple jump title, leaping 14.77 (48-5½).
