Wolters and Osborn: Double Champions of the Western Conference
Iowa City, IA, June 2–3, 1922
The U.S. collegiate Western Conference championships took place in Iowa at the beginning of June.
Among the double champions was Arthur Wolters, who won both the 440 and 880-yard races, setting world-leading times in each. In the one-lap, the stopwatch recorded 48.0 seconds, equivalent to 47.7 seconds for 400 meters, a time that placed him in the all-time top 10 for the distance. His two-lap win of 1:55.0 equated to around 1:54.4 for 800 meters.
Future double Olympic champion Harold Osborn joined Wolters with wins in the high jump and long jump.
Hayes Broke the Conference Record
Veteran Billy Hayes won the 100-yard dash in 9.7 seconds, breaking a 19-year-old conference record. Future NCAA champion Leonard Paulu claimed the 220-yard title. Paulu nearly secured a double victory but was narrowly beaten by Hayes in the 100-yard final.
The high hurdles saw quick times as well, with Albert Knollin winning in 15.0 seconds, tying for second in the world rankings for the year.
John Murphy won the high jump with the year’s third-best mark of 1.957m (6-5), while Thomas Lieb placed third in the world with his discus throw of 45.01m (147-7).
