Peltzer Secures His First German Title

Duisburg, August 18-20, 1922

The 24th German Championships were held in mid-August 1922.

Hubert Houben sprinted to double victory again, winning both the 100 and 200 metres.

Arthur Holz also emerged as a multiple title winner, claiming victory in both the long jump and the decathlon.

Trossbach Knocks on the Door of the World’s Top Ten

The best result of the competition was recorded by Heinrich Trossbach, who set a new German record in the sprint hurdles with a time of 15.3 seconds, placing him 11th in the world rankings for 1922. He defeated Ernst Paulus, who later took up discus and went on to participate in the 1928 Amsterdam Olympics in that event.

Trossbach, however, did not go to the Amsterdam Olympics but his son, Wolfgang, competed in the Helsinki Olympics in 1952, naturally in the 110 metres hurdles. Meanwhile, Trossbach Sr. focused on editing Der Leichtathlet, a publication different from the other German athletics journal, Leichtathletik.

In addition to Trossbach, another German record was set by Frankfurt-based Emil Bedarff, who completed 25 laps of the track in 32:47.6. Heinrich Fricke achieved a pole vault height of 3.80 metres, which was also a German record.

Doctor, independent thinker, and future world record holder in middle-distance running, Otto Peltzer, secured his first German Championship title, with the medal awarded after his victory in the 1500 metres.
