The U.S. Championships were held in Chicago at the familiar Soldier Field. Elizabeth “Betty” Robinson, who won Olympic gold at age 16 the previous summer in Amsterdam, clocked a meet record of 11.2 in the 100-yard dash, a time equivalent to about a second slower over the metric distance, securing her a shared second place in the world rankings.
