Stockholm Stadium, Stockholm, Sweden, July 12, 1912
Armas Taipale, nicknamed Big Armas, carefully watches the flight of the discus, knowing that on his final throw, he managed to get a good grip. A law student from Helsinki, Finland, then exits the throwing circle brimming with excitement. His winning result of 45.21m (134-4) sets a new Olympic record. Competitors from America lag behind by about three meters. Among them is James Duncan, who earlier in the same year had achieved a mark of 47.58m (156-1), which was a new world record at the time.
