Olympic Stadium, Helsinki, July 26, 1952
Soviet women made a strong entrance in the 1952 Summer Olympics. Galina Zybina, a blonde-haired athlete who barely survived the Siege of Leningrad, threw a world record of 15.28 (50-1½) to win the Soviet Union's second gold medal in track and field history.
Zybina, who was born in 1931, returned to the Helsinki Olympic Stadium in 2012 to present the medals for the shot put competition at the European Championships at Helsinki.
