Deutsches Stadion, Berlin, August 2–3, 1930
Helmut Körnig, the Olympic bronze medallist from Amsterdam 1928, was crowned a double champion in 1930, sweeping both the 100 and 200. While the law student had to grind out his victory in the century sprint, he cantered to an effortless win in the furlong. The Silesian speedster’s trophy cabinet now groaned under the weight of seven individual national titles.
Kurt Weiss, who distracted himself from the track with a spot of field hockey, laboured his way to a third decathlon title. His tally of 7536.705 points earned him the seventh spot in the world rankings.
In the discus circle, Hans Hoffmeister bested the world-class Ernst Paulus, settling a score from the 1928 championships. His winning effort barely cleared 45 metres, however, leading the press to mutter darkly that Hoffmeister’s golden age was perhaps drawing to a close.
Several luminaries were conspicuously absent. Joachim Büchner and world-record shot-putter Emil Hirschfeld were convalescing at home, citing overexertion. As for the middle-distance star Otto Peltzer, the German federation had seen fit to slap him with a suspension.
