Athletics in the Southern Hemisphere continues during the Northern Hemisphere’s winter. South African sprinters Jack Oosterlaak and Wilhelm Bukes took part in the Oceania tour in February, competing in the Northern New Zealand Championships, where they secured a double victory in the 220-yard race with excellent times. Oosterlaak powered to victory in warm, sunny weather with a time of 21.8 seconds (equivalent to 21.7 seconds for the 200-metre distance, which earned a joint second place in the world rankings). Bukes finished in a shared fifth place with a time of 21.8 seconds (21.9).
Little was heard from Oosterlaak after this. His greatest achievement, which could be considered a "shooting star" moment, was winning the silver medal in the long relay at the Antwerp Games.
