Olympic marathon bronze medallist Martti Marttelin and multiple Finnish cross-country champion Väinö Sipilä faced off in a 30,000-metre race in Tampere. Marttelin led at the 20,000-meter mark, with Sipilä already trailing by a lap. At the 25,000-metre mark, Marttelin was clocked at 1:24:24.0, a new world record for the distance. After 27,000 metres, Sipilä from Pälkäne caught up to the Olympic bronze medalist and immediately moved ahead. Sipilä ran strongly to the finish line, setting a new world record time for 30,000 metres at 1:43:07.8. The previous record, held by Olympic champion Albin Stenroos for four years, was broken by over three minutes.
The Finnish national record in the pole vault was improved for the third time in 1928. John Lindroth cleared 3.835 (12-7).
