Memorial Coliseum, Los Angeles, CA, June 3–4, 1927
Charley Borah was in top form at the turn of May and June. First, he won the IC4A collegiate championship in the 220 yards in Philadelphia with the season's second-fastest time of 20.9 seconds (straight track, equivalent to 21.3 for 200 meters on a curved track). A week later, he had already taken the train back home to California, where he won the Pacific Coast Conference championship in the 220 yards with a time one-tenth slower than in Philadelphia. Borah also sprinted to victory in the 100 yards. The 220-yard race in Los Angeles was a good competition, as Dean Anderson of the University of Washington attacked to take second with a personal best of 21.2 seconds, securing him tenth place in the season's world rankings.
Olympic pole vault champion Lee Barnes of the University of Southern California performed in a similar fashion to his teammate Borah. First, a second-place finish in Philadelphia with the season's second-best mark of 4.20 (13-9½) and a week later, a victory in Los Angeles at a height one centimeter lower. Jack Williams, also representing the University of Southern California, and R. Ward Edmonds of Stanford shared second place with a mark of 4.11 (13-6).
The season's top discus thrower, Clifford "Biff" Hoffman, secured a victory for the Stanford Cardinals. He won the last event of the afternoon, the discus, and picked up crucial points for his team.
