Stagg Field, Chicago, IL, September 14, 1924
Thomas Lieb may have left the Paris Olympics with a bronze medal, but his greatest throw came later in the year. On September 14, at Stagg Field in Chicago, Lieb launched a discus throw of 47.61m (156-2), setting a new world record that was eventually ratified.
The announcement of the new record traveled slowly to Europe—possibly across the Atlantic by rowboat—as Finland’s Helsingin Sanomat reported the news nearly three weeks after the throw.
