The sprinting season began on a promising note. The fourth-ranked Olympian Claude Bracey bested rookie George Simpson early in the season. Bracey clocked a time of 9.5 in the Texas Relays, though it wasn’t recognized as a world record due to a tailwind, while Simpson was a tenth of a second behind.
Paavo Nurmi won a two-mile race with a modest time of 9:23.4. The next day, he ran an unremarkable exhibition relay against a team.
