Copenhagen | July 9–10, 1923
Erik Wilén capitalised on his peak form after Gothenburg by blazing through the 400m hurdles in Copenhagen, setting a new Finnish record of 55.3. While this performance ranked fourth in the world standings, it was relatively less impressive compared to his 49.0 flat 400m in Gothenburg, as the gruelling hurdles event was scarcely practised globally in the early 1920s.
Adriaan Paulen of the Netherlands avenged his defeat in Gothenburg, edging out Wilén in the flat 400m with a time of 49.3. The athlete from Helsinki IFK club finished “by a head.” Paulen also claimed victory in the 800m, but his time of 1:55.1 barely made it into the top ten of the season’s world rankings.
Finland’s Vilho Niittymaa secured victory in the shot put combined results competition.
