Copenhagen, Denmark, July 22, 1923
Charles Hoff made big world records in Copenhagen in the second half of July. The versatile athlete from Norway first jumped the world record of 4.15m (13-7 1/2), and then immediately raised it to 4.20m (13-9¼). The new world record height went over on the second try. In the verification measurement, the result was one centimeter more (4.21m -13-9 1/2). One of the toughest athletic performances of 1923 had been seen. It was not in vain that a Finnish newspaper, Turun Sanomat, praised the result as "magical."
