History graduate Guinn Smith from California surprised everyone with a win in the pole vault at with a result of 4.30m, which is almost half a meter short of the world record set by Cornelius Warmedam. On the other hand, the final was contested in the rain.
Erkki Kataja of Finland beat the future double Olympic champion, pastor Bob Richards, and unexpectedly took the silver. Injured Boo Morcom, who was experimenting with the fiberglass pole early on, was sixth and Finland's Valto Olenius was seventh.
