White City Stadium, London, July 15–16, 1938
Wijnand Van Beveren of the Netherlands, sixth in the Berlin Olympics 200, chugs to victory in the half-lap at the British Championships 1938, held at the 1908 Olympic venue in White City.
Another representative of the Netherlands Martinus Osendarp, the bronze medalist in the Berlin 100, sprints fastest in the straightaway.
Donald Finlay licks the English record with a 14.4 in the 120-yard hurdles (later that autumn, another tenth of a second would be shaved off the record at the Colombes stadium in Paris). During the Second World War, Finlay served his country in the Air Force, until the war ceased and it was time for competitive athletics again. The man tripped over a hurdle as a 39-year-old chap in the heats of London Olympics 1948.
