Stamford Bridge, London, August 16, 1930
Lien Gisolf.
Lien Gisolf’s purple patch showed no signs of fading, even two years on from her Olympic silver medal in Amsterdam. She clinched the British high jump title with a leap of 1.575 (5-2), a mark surpassed only by one other on the global stage this year. Her penchant for silver remained intact a fortnight later, when the lady bagged the runner-up spot at the Women’s World Games.
Meanwhile, Nellie Halstead—a Manchester lass often seen competing in a rather sensible bobble hat—scorched the Stamford Bridge cinders to clock a world-best 25.2 over 220 yards. Alas, the record-keepers proved obstinate; the time was denied official status, suffering the same fate as all marks set on a curved track in that era.
