Metcalf's Mill in Ashland to Boston, MA, USA, April 19, 1922
The Boston Marathon was won by the veteran Clarence DeMar, who pulled away from the others on the grueling uphill sections of the Newton Hills.
Finnish-American carpenter named Ville Ritola began to be heard in Finland as well. He finished second in the Boston Marathon with a time of 2:21:45. The route was found to be 37,200 meters in length upon inspection. Ritola's result, who ran his first marathon, corresponded to a time of about 2:43 in a full-length marathon, which placed him a respectable sixth place in the world rankings for 1922.
Ritola had skipped the 1921–1922 indoor season entirely. He tested his fitness by winning a 15-mile street race in Brooklyn at the end of February. Despite all this, he hesitated to go to Boston because he did not have proper running shoes. He only received them the day before the marathon.
The new shoes rubbed Ville's feet raw, so he was unable to walk for the following weeks.
