Drake Stadium, Des Moines, IA, April 26–27, 1929
At 1.96m (6-5) tall, Carl Jark threw the world’s fourth-longest discus throw that season at the Drake Relays in Des Moines. His throw of 48.22 (158-2) was a stroke of luck, as no other long throws came from this West Point cadet during the season, and he didn’t even rank among the top ten discus throwers of 1929.
Jark's throw would have been a world record had Eric Krentz not already set one earlier that spring with a throw of 49.90 (163-7).
Jark’s career as a discus thrower was short-lived, as military duties soon called. He initially planned to become a pilot but had to switch to the artillery branch after being informed that his large frame wouldn’t fit in the cockpit.
