Spectrometer
The spectrometer and the function of its parts.

Heavy Base
The base adds stability to the spectrometer
Turntable
This allows the optical apparatus to be rotated about the horizontal. The turntable must be level before using, many turntables have a spirit level in built into them as a guide. There will be screws on the table to allow you to balance the table.
Collimeter
To Collimate means to make parallel. Thats the function of the collimeter, its got a slit at one end and a lens at the other. Like we saw in the optics section, light coming in parallel to a converging (convex) lens comes to a focus at the focal point of the lens. The focal point of a lens is determined by the the focal length of the lens.
The opposite is true so if light is coming from a point that is the focal point of the lens it comes out .....
So the slit should be what distance from the lens ???
Astromical telescope
The other tube can be called an Astronomical telescope, a similiar tube to ones used for looking at celestial bodies.
A terestrial telescope is different, because the image is uprighted. Thats the difference between the two scopes.
********* schematic of telescopes
the telescope will be level with the turntable. A vernier scale will be attached to the telescope, the vernier scale allows for extremely accurate measurement

the telescope is made of 2 lenses the objective lens and the eyepiece, and crosstreads.
The crosstreads must be brought in to focus before we do anything. pg 207 rwp
