Celestial Bodies

Astronomy is the observational study of the Universe.

The Universe is the totality of all space, time, matter and energy.

Moon

A moon is a body that orbits a planet. Also called a natural satellite. Jupiter has 67 Moons. Do all Planets have moons?

Our moon is called Luna. *proposals on how our moon got there*

Asteroids

A small rock / planetoid that orbits the sun

Meteor ....

Comets,

Very small solar system bodies made of Ice, Rock and Dust. These bodies also orbit the Sun.

a Planet is

a celestial body moving in an elliptical orbit round a star. There are 8 Planets in OUR solar system. There are millions of planets.

It used to be easy to know what was and wasn’t a planet. Planets were big, bigger than any smaller moons that happened to be orbiting them. They were round. They orbited our sun. Then, in 2006, the erstwhile planet Pluto lost its major planet status, becoming a dwarf planet. Around that time, astronomers were discovering a plethora of small bodies in our own solar system, so that there are now half a million known asteroids and over a thousand Kuiper Belt Objects, including five recognized dwarf planets counting Pluto. Astronomers also now know several thousand exoplanets orbiting other stars. The dramatic expansion in the number of known objects orbiting our sun and other suns has caused some astronomers to try to override or re-define the 2006 planet definition from the International Astronomical Union (IAU), which caused Pluto to lose full planet status.

Stars,

A star is a large BALL of PLASMA that gives off LIGHT and HEAT. Through a process called Nuclear Fusion, which forces the Hydrogen gases to become Helium Gases. In some of the bigger stars the gravitational pressures are so big they are able to force heavier elements into Fusion.

All stars are held together by their own gravity.

There are many types of stars

  • Protostar:
  • T Tauri Star: ...
  • Main Sequence Star: ...
  • Red Giant Star: ...
  • White Dwarf Star: ...
  • Red Dwarf Star: ...
  • Neutron Stars: ...
  • Supergiant Stars

LUMINOUS means an object gives out it own light,

Solar Systems

The Solar system is made up of a star and all that revolves about the it. Our Solar system, has 8 Planets, many Moons, Asteroid Belts, Comets, dwarf planets lots of empty space.

Q How many moons are in our solar system?

Q Name the 2 asteroid belts?

Galaxies

a system of millions or billions of stars, together with gas and dust, held together by gravitational attraction. Galaxies rotate about a common center. Names of Galaxies, the Milky way, the Andromeda Galaxy, the Pinwheel Galaxy.

Space

the near-vacuum extending between the planets and stars, containing small amounts of gas and dust.

Universe

all existing matter and space considered as a whole; the cosmos.
