Votes Should be cast giving a 1, 2, 3 and so on to the end. You should put your favorite first, and continue voting until you reach the end.

There are different systems in place in different countries,

In the UK they use a 1st past the post system

We can vote for our favourite, and count these votes, the winner is the one with the most votes.

In Ireland we use the single transferrable vote and the quorate system

an excellent page to comment on this is http://www.idea.int/esd/upload/ireland.pdf

We could use single transferable vote, where each person votes and puts the candidates in order of preference. In this type of election the winner is the one that take 50% of the vote plus 1 more vote. So if 304 people votes 50 % would be 152 votes + 1 = 153 votes for Quorum.

If the Quorum is not reached on a 1st count, those candidates with the lowest number of votes is eliminated and their votes are re-distributed to their 2nd choice candidates. If the quorum is not reached the next time then this is repeated until one candidate gets to quorum.

As we go to school in Ireland we should get used to the Irish way

So lets go through the votes, the returning officers (person in charge of the voting) should call out the most preferred candidate for each ballot paper, you should act as the 'tally-men' and count the votes.
