The Center of Gravity of an Irregular shaped object

1 the letter L / F

Sometimes we might be given an irregular shaped body and be required to find the CoG of the oddly shaped body.

This is simple to do, break the irregular shape into simpler shapes, as you would have done finding the area of such shape.

Find the CoG of each of the component parts, this will just be the centre if the shape has uniform thickness.

Now balance the sum of the moments with the moments of the sum.

In this case the weight of each piece should be taken to be proportional to each unit of area in the shape.

2 an object that has a piece missing or removed.

well then the opposite is true that the CoG of the Entire body (the body as it should be) = location of the CoG (in x & y) time the mass of the remaining bit + the location of the CoG (in x & y) time the mass of the missing bit, rearrange so

location of the CoG (in x & y) time the mass of the remaining bit = CoG of the Entire body (the body as it should be) - location of the CoG (in x & y) time the mass of the missing bit
