Elsewhere, in the city of Puerta Mibela on the island nation of La Perdita:
In a star-shaped building, seven young figures dressed in similar uniforms sat in meeting. Or, rather, they each hovered slightly above the floor under their combined power.
The youngest one, a ten-year-old blond boy of Nordic ancestry named Axel addressed the group, although no voice was spoken. "It's as I told you guys earlier! That ghost said that La Perdita would face a great evil, and that Perdita would be doomed if the river of the future wasn't diverted now!"
The oldest one, a twenty-one-year-old young man of English ancestry named Devlin, replied, "Now, I'm not saying you're wrong, Axel, but this wouldn't be the first time a spirit attempted to deceive us. We need to keep our heads cool about this."
The thirteen-year-old Irish redheaded twins, Brianna and Kevin, spoke as one. "We think Samuel and his friends should handle their own problems. We can always step in if they are at their rope's end, but they must be allowed their own space. If the situation begins to threaten Perditians, however, then we've obviously got to do something."
The second oldest of the group, a nineteen-year-old young woman of Italian origins named Guida-Sofia, spoke. "Ehy, but the situation has already gotten out of hand, young ones. Even as we speak, a beast has been unleashed outside the Dawson building; its mind is full of utter violence. It's only a matter of time before others are brought into this conflict. I move that we act immediately, at least to cordon off the area. We owe our fellow Perditians that much."
The fifteen-year-old Stefano and his girlfriend, the sixteen-year-old Daniela, both of Spanish and Carib Indian ancestry, spoke up next. "We agree with Guida-Sofia. The moment a conflict such as this one threatens the peace and stability of La Perdita, it becomes our problem."
"Right. We cannot let MBL Consulting fight our battles alone."
Their minds were silent for a few moments until Devlin finally replied, "It looks like we have some sort of consensus, then. Axel, care to lead the way?"
The boy brightened considerably, though he still wore an appropriately serious expression, and levitated above the group as the star-shaped roof of their meeting place opened up through the telekinetic power of his mind. The other members of La Perdita's Psychic Security and Intelligence (PSI) Unit followed closely on his heels.
The young PSI-Unit team was monitored by their older mentors. And with a smile, the short-cut gray-haired man turned to a well-dressed woman on his left.
"So, Tanya... I see our team is feeling up to the hazards of possible public attention. Are they actually ready for that?"
She sat down on a chair next to him and looked at the rows of monitors that showed different rooms in the complex.
"Yes. Remember that one of my youngsters down there is the best grand master class screener in his age group. No one will notice them if he doesn't slip up. I consider this to be a great test for further field operations. And remember, Marc, you were hasty and rash at his age, too."
"Hmmm... true. Boy, did we have fun then... no other metas here except us and the voodoo cult that we tricked into believing they actually saw their gods. Those were the days."
Marc got up and went to the cabinet and poured a glass of whisky. "You want some? It's Auchentochan, a great whisky for mind-benders like us." He smiled.
