Louisiana, a few miles north of New Orleans:
The Jeep Wrangler pulled to a screeching stop, sending dust, smoke and broken rock into the air. With no words, a bolt of electricity erupted from Turner's open hand. The Jeep's front door opened on its own, and Jackie was struck by the electricity and was sent from the car into a brick wall. Turner kept his eyes locked on hers as he advanced toward her, electricity pinning her onto the wall.
Edulcore Cicciotto jumped out of the car and rushed toward Turner. "What the hell are you doing?"
Turner at first ignored him, his gaze never moving from the mysterious woman in front of him. Turner's eyes turned fully red, and the girl shook in pain.
"Stop this!" Ed yelled again, but got no reaction from Turner. "Now!"
Cicciotto tackled Turner, sending them both onto the ground. With Turner's concentration broken, Jackie fell to the ground, breathing heavily. The air around them was dusty and muggy. Turner wiped dirt from his expensive suit and turned his attention to Ed. "She's dangerous, Ed. Trust me on this. You don't want to know her."
Turner's eyes lit up once again, this time met with Ed's fist. Turner fell back a step and rubbed his chin. "Nice punch," the ex-MCCA agent said, respect in his voice. Then he returned the favor. Ed fell back and then jumped at Turner, taking him to the ground.
"What are you talking about?" Edulcore demanded, his rage more evident then ever.
"Calm down," whispered Turner, who was still calm, before kicking Ed off of him. "She's Alpha Class." Turner got to his feet. Jackie was already gone.
"So she's powerful. That's no reason--"
"When she was eighteen, she murdered over a hundred students that went to school with her."
Cicciotto was at a loss for words.
"Jackie Munroe. I didn't fully recognize her until after the UFO incident." Turner slapped himself in his forehead. "We helped her escape."
Ed turned, looking at the city on the horizon, which was booming with people. "She has our cash."
"Well, then..." Turner paused, also looking toward the city. "...it would appear that we should locate her, and quickly."
"Tell me about her," Edulcore requested.
"It was at the beginning of my career," said Turner. "She was very young. There was a murder spree throughout her school. Students and teachers, all killed. She was the only survivor. And she was a meta."
"Why she did the massacre?"
"Nobody ever found out. She claimed she was innocent, saying it was the bogeyman that killed all those people. She was really disturbed."
"How did she kill them?"
"It seemed that she bit them to death."
"Gross! How could she have done it to all of them, before someone stopped her?"
"She's a teleporter. Nobody could have stopped her. That's why we've never been able to capture her. But there's a death sentence over her."
"And now? How will you stop her now?"
"I don't think we will. I only want our money back. And to find her, I know the right places in New Orleans to gather information about newcomers."
Cicciotto didn't know what to think. The girl had saved his life, that was for sure. Was she also a mass murder? Who knew? She didn't seem to be that kind of person. She seemed nice and friendly, but who could know for sure? What Ed couldn't understand was why, if she was a teleporter, she remained at the scene of the crime. What if she was really innocent?
Somewhere:
"Frank? Minchia, picciotto, quanto tempo! This is Tony. I have a little job for you. There are two freaks that should have arrived right now in New Orleans with my money. I want the money back. The two freaks are for you. Do what you want with 'em."
From her hiding place, Jackie watched Edulcore and Turner argue. She looked at the former MCCA agent; so was that the guy who had helped her sister all those years ago? Maybe he still knew where she was hiding. No, his reaction had been genuine surprise.
Time to play a little joke on the man. She took the money out of the bag and teleported it three feet above his head. Turner yelped in surprise and cursed the sky and Jackie, using a vulgar word in place of her name.
She laughed. This mission would prove to be fun after all. She hoped Ed would put his hand in his right pocket soon, where she had put the meeting address and flight tickets to Paris.
While Edulcore was gathering the money from the dusty road, just as Turner was doing not far away, a disturbing thought hit his mind. Jackie looked at least twenty-four years old. "Turner, when did it happen?"
"What?"
"The massacre in the school?"
"Well, I'm not sure. Four or five years ago. Why?"
But after he said the words, a shadow obscured Turner's face. He, too, had the same thought. Turner hadn't even been created yet when that incident must have happened.
