Game room:
Danny Hearn relaxed on a couch on the second floor as a frustrated Sam Dawson was at a nearby counter with a phone to his ear.
"Pick up... come on..."
"Beep -- beep -- beep -- Hey, this is Michelle, not here, but leave me one and I'll get bac--"
CLICK.
Sam brushed his hair back and pounded on the counter.
"No luck?" Danny asked, staring at the ceiling.
"Nope."
"Maybe you should let Pete give her a call for you."
"Nah, I'd rather not," Sam said, frowning.
"What, afraid she might end up with him?" Danny said with a mocking tone. Sam was silent. "Not in the mood, eh?"
"I had my chance to get back together with the woman I love and have loved for as long as I could remember, and I blew it."
"That sucks." Danny then paused before adding ruefully, "At least you still have a chance to get back with her. My ex willn't even be born for another sixty-two years."
"Sorry, buddy."
"It's okay. She dumped my ass, anyhow."
"I can't believe this. It's been a month. She won't return my calls or letters. I even sent her a few e-mails, but nothing."
"Don't forget all those roses and the teddy bear."
"I know, please don't remind me. It looks like my chance is truly over."
"What even happened between you guys? Hasn't it been over for years or something?" Danny asked, not fully understanding Sam's weird behavior over the last month.
"Yes. No. Well, yeah. But stuff happened. Well, not really, but almost. I mean."
"Just spit it out, already."
"It happened the morning after the party."
"Oh, the party you forgot to mention to me and that I almost missed to fight demons underground in Uruguay?" Danny's tone was only half-serious.
"Yeah, same party."
"Okay, so what happened?"
"Well... I got up in the morning, after having drunk way too much, and... much to my surprise, I wasn't alone."
The day after the party:
Sam woke up, his hands moving right up to his head, his vision still a little blurred from the night before. As he pulled the covers away, he spotted a beautiful female next to him: Jamie, from the night before. Sam hit himself in the forehead. A girl this beautiful in his bed, and he had no memory from the night before. Carefully getting up to not wake her, he quickly located a pair of shorts and put them on; he did the same with a tank top. Slowly moving across his apartment, he was careful not to make any noises.
Now:
"Man, you had no memory of sleeping with this chick?"
"Nope. Anyhow, let me continue. So I carefully made my way out of the room..."
Then:
Sam finally got out of the apartment and carefully closed the door behind him. With a sigh of relief he took a few steps, not noticing Li'l Jo's water bowl, and tripped over it with a loud thud. He whispered, "Shit!" to himself. Quickly, he jumped into the elevator and pressed the button for the first floor. While going down, he punched the side of the elevator and shook his head.
The elevator doors opened, and Sam walked out. The first floor was a mess, littered with empty bottles, cans, and snack foods. Sam passed by Bhaghhh-rupth, lord of the flies and of the rotten land, passed out next to M'xy's homemade fountain, and can only smile; now that was something he would never forget. I mean it was not every day that a huge Ninja-Turtle-type thing popped out of thin air and started to break dance.
Now:
"Damn, you remember the stuff about a big turtle but not sleeping with a beautiful woman?" Danny asked.
"Shhhhh," said Sam. "I'm not done yet."
Then:
Sam stopped short at the sight of Michelle Campbell sleeping on one of the couches. Her eyes opened, meeting his. He had no clue what to say.
"Sam."
"Michelle?"
"I came by last night."
"Wha--?" Sam held his head, still in pain. Now he was also confused.
"Don't say a word. I just have to get this out." She paused for a second. "It hurt when you left, it really did. I wanted to hate you for leaving, never calling. But I couldn't. Clark and I just happened. But it was never what we had. Now, just as quick, it is over. Sam, I -- I still have feelings for you. I want us to..." She paused again. "I don't know, but I miss what we had."
Sam stood there speechless for a moment. "Michelle..."
"Yeah," she said, moving closer toward him, their faces almost touching.
"Michelle, I have always lov--"
Sam's voice was cut off with the sound of the elevator opening. Sam and Michelle turned as Jamie got out, redressed in a quick and sloppy manor, her beautiful red hair messy and out of place.
"Sam, THANKS for a wonderful night. We should do it more often."
She stepped between Sam and Michelle and kissed him on the cheek. Jamie then left. Michelle paused for a moment and realized what happened the night before. Her expression changed, sadness overtaking her. Silence followed for a few moments. She held back emotion. "Never mind," she finally said.
Sam was speechless as Michelle looked him in the eyes. She then turned and left in a hurry.
Now:
"Mate!" Danny said loud and clear. "You just let her leave?"
"I didn't know what to say, and my head was throbbing so badly that I couldn't react."
"You really don't remember sleeping with the hot chick?"
Sam turned and shook his head.
"Now that sucks."
