Naecken grabbed one of the spawn of Beimoth, and used him as a club, scattering the trio of tentacled bipeds like bowling pins.
But the howls of the sons reached the furious Beimoth, who now entered the fray. "Are you the worms that transported me here?" he said, hitting Naecken squarely in the face, sending him into a nearby wall. "You will all die for your insolence!"
Tobias Christopher swallowed hard. What chance would they have against a creature that could hit Naecken like that?
In a blur, he jumped onto Naecken's back as he tried to stand, and continued from there to the head of the hideous Beimoth. He returned to the side of Turkish Stringfellow, who looked upon him in amazement.
Suddenly, the huge monster collapsed and, with a deep grunt, died before their eyes.
The now-dazed sons stared in shock upon the still colossus. They backed away, but Stringfellow asked the ground to open for them, and it complied, sending the trio down into a mile-long shaft.
Grimm looked at Tobias with newfound respect. "How did you do that?"
"Simple. I phased my hand at superspeed and ripped the central nervous system out of his cerebral core. No brain, no pain." He smiled, showing the fleshy gray mass in his hand.
Ahead, footsteps running away, could be heard.
Aurochs ran through the tunnels as fast as he could. Impossible, he thought. How could they defeat Beimoth and his spawn so easily?
He had to get away. He did not have the strength yet to teleport and was relying on the tunnels to confuse the metahumans. He had seen the visage of Death on the skull-faced man and knew it to be a bad omen. Why, WHY had he come down here in person?
As the ragtag band members were congratulating themselves on their quick victory, they heard the sounds of footsteps echoing through the tunnels.
"What is...?"
"You don't think--?"
"Sshh!"
"He won't get away," Danny Hearn said. He then said to Hal, "Wolf ears, wolf nose, cat eyes," and bounded off into the darkness.
"Heywhatarewewaitingforseeyouattheexit!" Tobias zoomed off after him, bypassing him to guard the exit and wait for their mysterious pursuer.
As the others began to follow, heading back into the tunnel the way they came, Grimm stopped and took one last look around at the giant-fisted corpse and the cracks where the earth had briefly opened.
Well, that was... anticlimactic, he thought before turning to follow the others into the tunnels.
