Science fiction and fantasy are studied as specialized forms of literature in this class. Multiple genres and styles of literature will be read as students are introduced to the history, development, and cultural legacy of both science fiction and fantasy. Current social issues such as artificial intelligence, power and control, censorship, and futuristic societies will be explored. Students will have the opportunities to read texts such as Ender’s Game, Binti, The Hobbit, The Handmaid’s Tale, Ready Player One, Kindred, The Midnight Library, The Hunger Games, Fahrenheit 451, and other novels when they participate in literature circles. Writing activities are integrated into the various units of study.
