Waldemarsudde

Waldemarsudde is a most pleasant museum located in Djurgården along the bank of the fjärden leading to central Stockholm. It used to be the residence of Pince Eugén (full name being Prince Eugen Napoleon Nicolaus of Sweden and Norway, Duke of Närke), a famous painter yet having been the fourth in line for the throne of Sweden at the turn of the XXth century. As a painter, he became the most prominent landscape painter of his time. Of particular interest for the Baltic sailors are his paintings of clouds and of the Stockholm fjord (See the page on BalticSailors) . Prince EUgen was an active collector of art, which is reflected in the museum. On the terrace, there are sculpture of the Samothrace victoey, sculptures by Auguste Rodin (the thinker) and by Antoine Bourdelle (Hercules the archer) as well as several sculptures by Carl Millés (the chemist, the eagle, the little triton). In his collection, painting by him, Anders Zorn and Eugène Jansson among others.

The facility hosts as well a plant nursery and horticulture school, which is reflected in the amazing floral displays present all year long in the museum. For the plant lovers, you can find in the museum shops the line of famous Waldermasudde flower-pot holders and all the equipment to develop your art of Japanese Ikebana flower arrangements.

The Waldemarsudde fully justifies his claim to be the nicest art museum in Sweden!
