Grotviken
Grotviken is another improbable mooring in the Baltic where you can come and beach directly on the sand dune. Navionics indicate less than 50 cm of water at this location, but Cybèle beached there in 2016, indicating more than 2 metres of depth, 2 metres from the shore, meaning that boat with a keel can beach here as well. Grotviken is on Seskarö, an island in the Haparanda archipelago connected through the main land by a bridge. Because of its unique location, Seskarö have been occupied since the XVIth century by fishermen, hunters and farmers. These communities frew to around 80 permanent residents until the mid-XIXth century.
In 1892, a first saw-mill was established on the island. Few years later additional saw-mills developed and Seskarö became a very active island with a population of around 3000. All but one mills were dismantled in the late 1920s'.
