Baggensstäket

November 2015

The Baggenstäket is a narrow canal allowing to go to Stockholm when coming from the south through Dalarö and Slatsjöbaden. It is a very picturesque cruise.

There is a marina in Saltsjö-Duvnas on the way, and a natural harbour in Östanvik. In addition, you can stop for a few hours in the marina in front of the Hamn Museum in Fisksätra to visit the museum and the restaurant.

The Baggenstäket used to be the main entry point to Stockholm until the middle ages when it got too shallow because of the post glacial rebound at a time boats got bigger. In early 1700s the canal was dredged to increase its depth. In 1710, the plague entered Sweden through the Baggensstäket in a boat coming from Estonia. In August 1719, Russian troops landed at the entrance of the Baggenstäket and attempted to march towards Stockholm but were repeled during the Battle of Stäket.
