Kuggören is a peninsula offering a very good shelter, except for strong northerly winds, off the coast at Hudiksvall. There is a Svenska Kryssar Klubb buoy in the bay. The village is very picturesque. Kuggören used to be an island used by fishermen from Gävle but is now connected to the main land by a narrow path. Kuggörarna as Svenska Högarna is one of these remote islands the name of which is known by most Sweedes as it hostys a weather station often mentioned on radio.
The island includes thirty small traditional fishermen cottages. There are still couple of professional fishermen residing on the island. The cage on the picture below is immersed along the shore to capture salmons wandering along the shore on their way back to freshwater rivers where they will mate. The cage is connected to long nests acting as a labyrinth and directing the salmons to the cage. Interestingly, the cage bottom pads can be inflated from the surface to raise the cage above sea level and get the trapped salmon through and opening at the back. These nets are usually properlly indicated using buoys. However, sailors should not underestimate the size of the nets. It becomes particularly difficult when sailing at night a bit out of the identified pathways...
The chapell was erected in 1778. Alatr paintings were made in 1778 by Hudiksvall painter Paul Hallberg. The votive ship is "örn", the eagle in English.
Kuggören used to have a public telephone that is still there for visits.
As in fishermen villages, you can see quite a few oven for smoking fish around the cottages.
Kuggören is accessible by bus from Hudiksvall
The bay in Kuggören is protected from all but northerly winds. Anchoring in the bay may prove difficult as the bay is deep and the depth decreases very rapidly when approaching the coast.
