Lakes and canals

There are many different places in Scandinavia where you can sail in canals and lakes. Skagen in Denmark, Mälaren, Göta Kanal, Vannern and Vattern, Finish lakes, German lakes, Estonian lakes...

Dragets canal is a canal that allows going from Nynäshamn to Södertälje without the need to pass Landsort in the open sea. This passage is documented as back as the crusade of Valdemar II in its pilot book. Today, with the post glacial uplift, only small boats or center-board boats as the OVNIs' can get though.

Ice sailing, or ice yatching as we should say is very popular in Sweden as in other Sacandinavian countries. While the open sea is not very favourable for ice yatching, the Mälaren or the inner Archipelago coves and bays are very well suited because they tend to freeze deeply, unaffected by the ferry traffic still taking place in the outer archipelago. On a typical weekend in January of February, you will encounter with envy these very fast sailing "boats".
