Mässkär is another island that used to be a pilot station along the Finnish coast of the Bottenviken in the Kvarken area, 5 nautical milles away from Jacobstad on the main land. The pilot station and coast guard harbour is nowadays welcoming sailors cruising these waters. The landscape with its old houses is very picturesque.
Mässkär in July can be accessed daily by a local cruise service. In addition, chartered taxi boats can be organised from Jacobstad.
The approach to the harbour is well marked, initially through an alignment indicated on charts, then in the buoyed channel. Beware, sometimes the water level can be 1 m lower than usual, depending on the wind.
