Steninge Castle

Steninge palace situated in a park on the bank of the Mälaren. The palace itself cannot be visited but the park is opened to visitors. The architect that built the palace is the same as the one who conceived Drottningholm in Stockholm.

In 1735 the Fersen family bought Steninge. In 1747 Steninge was made a trust. In 1810 Axel von Fersen was murdered. A monument in memory of Axel von Fersen was erected at Steninge in 1813.

Steninge is mostly famous for its shopping mini mall established in the old stone barn from 1873. It is particularly busy as a Christmas market place where people will come from the whole Stockholm area. The shopping centre includes the famous Swedish Kosta Boda glass art company as well as the renowned Bruk restaurant.

There is a marina indicated on the map of the area displayed at the entrance of the castle estate. But a visit to the marina indicates a private boat club where it does no seem to a visitor berth...

Steninge boat club

Getting there

By public transport

  • 1h20m from Stockholm Central by pendeltåg and bus.
  • One hour from Uppsala by train and bus as well.

By sailing boat

The small pier at Steninge castle is to shallow for boat docking. The marina nearby does not seem to have visitor berths. Ancring would be best option.
